Target Information
Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 16, also known as the low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor (NGFR), is crucial for the development and functioning of the nervous system. Studies with NGFR knockout mice reveal significant abnormalities in neuronal growth and plasticity, linked to psychiatric conditions such as depression and schizophrenia. Furthermore, NGFR is vital for neurogenesis in the adult mouse hippocampus. A deficiency in NGFR results in decreased neurogenesis, negatively impacting cognitive function. Additionally, NGFR plays a pivotal role in the immune system, particularly in the mouse thymus, where it regulates B cell activation and the negative selection process.
