Versican is encoded by the VCAN gene in horses. Versican is a large extracellular matrix proteoglycan. Versican was found to be important in cell proliferation, migration and angiogenesis and is generally considered to be an anti-adhesive molecule that plays a central role in tissue morphogenesis and maintenance.
