Target Information
Natriuretic peptide A is encoded by the NPPA gene in horses. It serves as an anti-permeability factor. It achieves this by inhibiting the signaling functions of vascular permeability factor, thereby maintaining the integrity of endothelial cell tight junctions. Interestingly, ANP is synthesized and secreted by cardiac muscle cells within the atrial walls of the heart. Plasma atrial/A-type natriuretic peptide concentration is increased in horses with heart disease associated with altered left-sided chamber dimensions and/or function.
