Target Information
Fibrinogen, also known as coagulation factor I, is a glycoprotein complex produced in the liver and circulates in the blood of all vertebrates. During tissue and vascular injury, thrombin enzymatically converts fibrinogen into fibrin, leading to the formation of a fibrin-based blood clot. As a "positive" acute-phase protein, fibrinogen levels in the blood increase in response to systemic inflammation, tissue injury, and certain other events. It was found that ADP-induced platelet aggregation in rabbits requires the presence of fibrinogen and that binding of fibrinogen to specific receptors on the platelet surface underlies this process.
