Target Information

Leptin is a hormone mainly produced by adipocytes and intestinal cells in the small intestine. It helps regulate energy balance by suppressing hunger, which in turn reduces fat storage in adipocytes. Leptin has a significant effect on growth and development of cattle. Polymorphisms in the Leptin gene were found to be associated with traits such as growth rate, live weight and heavy live weight at slaughter in cattle. In addition, changes in Leptin levels affect feed intake behavior and growth efficiency of cattle. In cattle, leptin is a potential mediator of early placental development and function.
