Target Information
Methionine aminopeptidase 2 (MetAP2) is responsible for the cotranslational removal of the N-terminal methionine from newly synthesized proteins. The N-terminal methionine is typically cleaved when the second amino acid in the sequence is small and uncharged, such as alanine, cysteine, glycine, proline, serine, threonine, or valine. MetAP2 is essential in mouse embryonic development, as its systemic knockout results in early developmental defects during gastrulation, ultimately leading to embryonic lethality. Furthermore, knocking out MetAP2 in specific tissues, such as hematopoietic progenitor cells, causes abnormal vascular development and a lethal phenotype during the mid-blastoderm stage. This indicates that MetAP2 is crucial for angiogenesis and embryonic development.
