Target Information
The erythropoietin receptor is a target for erythropoietin, instrumental in the proliferation and differentiation of erythroblasts in response to erythropoietin stimulation. When stimulated by EPO, the erythropoietin receptor dimerizes, initiating the JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway. Serving as the primary target for EPO, this receptor, when activated, facilitates the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors via pathways such as JAK2-STAT, PI3K-AKT, and ERK. A deficiency in the erythropoietin receptor results in embryonic lethality in mice due to impaired normal erythropoiesis. Furthermore, this receptor is present in the mouse brain, particularly in neural precursor cells and astrocytes, where its activation by EPO leads to increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), thereby offering protection to neurons against hypoxia and cerebral ischemia.
