Target Information

Contactins play a key role in mediating cell surface interactions during the development of the nervous system. Specifically, Contactin-1 is crucial for forming paranodal axo-glial junctions in myelinated peripheral nerves and facilitates signaling between axons and myelinating glial cells through its association with CNTNAP1. It also contributes to the generation of oligodendrocytes by acting as a ligand for NOTCH1, promoting NOTCH1 activation by facilitating the release and nuclear translocation of the notch intracellular domain (NICD). In mice, Contactin-1 is important for processes such as myelination, neuronal differentiation and migration, synapse formation and maintenance, and maintaining intestinal immune function. It is also closely linked to the migration and differentiation of thalamic neurons. The absence of Contactin-1 results in abnormal thalamic neuron migration, adversely affecting normal neuronal development.
