Target Information

Deoxypyridinoline is one of two pyridinium cross-links that provide structural stiffness to type I collagen found in bones. Deoxypyridinoline is excreted unmetabolized in urine and serves as a specific marker of bone resorption and osteoclastic activity. It is useful in monitoring treatments containing bone-active agents like estrogens and bisphosphonates. Research has shown that pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline are present in very small amounts in type X collagen.
