Target Information
Bovine hepcidin is a 25-amino-acid cationic peptide predominantly synthesized in bovine liver, with expression induced by iron overload and inflammation. As the central regulator of systemic iron homeostasis, it binds to ferroportin (iron exporter) on enterocytes, macrophages, and hepatocytes, triggering its internalization and degradation to block iron absorption and recycling. Critical for maintaining bovine iron balance, preventing iron toxicity, and modulating innate immunity, its dysregulation links to iron deficiency anemia and inflammatory iron sequestration. As a key mediator of iron metabolism and host defense, bovine hepcidin is a critical target for studying ruminant iron biology, metabolic disorders, and livestock health interventions.
