Target Information
Aquaporin 1 (AQP-1) is a protein encoded by the AQP1 gene in pigs. AQP-1 is a widely expressed water channel whose physiological function has been best characterised in the kidney. It is found in the basolateral and apical plasma membranes of the proximal tubules, the descending limb of the loop of Henle and the descending part of the vasa recta. Porcine AQP1 is a member of Aquaporins, which are water channel proteins located on the membranes of various cell types, creating high water permeability. It is the first porcine aquaporin to be molecularly identified.
