Target Information
The glycolytic enzyme enolase converts 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphopyruvate and is widely distributed in mammalian tissues. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is the gamma subunit of this enzyme. This gene encodes one of the three enolase isoenzymes found in mammals. This isoenzyme, a homodimer, is found in mature neurons and cells of neuronal origin. Research has shown that serum neuron-specific enolase is a useful tumor marker for small cell lung cancer.
