Target Information
Translocator protein has the ability to bind protoporphyrin IX and may be involved in transporting porphyrins and heme. Initially identified as a peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor, it can also bind isoquinoline carboxamides. This protein facilitates the transport of cholesterol across mitochondrial membranes and may have a role in lipid metabolism. Research indicates that TSPO expression is elevated in activated microglia within mouse brain disease models. The function of TSPO in mice is not singularly clear. Although its role in steroid hormone synthesis and mitochondrial cholesterol transport remains controversial, there is more support for its potential functions in neuroinflammation, energy metabolism, and cellular stress responses.
