Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) governs the development and differentiation of the thyroid gland by interacting with its specific receptor, the Thyrotropin Receptor (TSHR). Research has demonstrated that the TSH/TSHR signaling pathway is crucial for thyroid morphogenesis and gene expression in mouse embryos. For instance, while the thyroid gland of mouse embryos lacking a functional TSHR develops normally, the expression of iodine metabolism-related genes, such as sodium/iodine symporters and peroxidases, is significantly reduced. TSH also plays a role in regulating various physiological processes, including basal metabolism, growth and development, and emotional and cognitive functions.
