Target Information
Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) is an enzyme that removes acetyl groups from lysine residues on the N-terminal regions of core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). This deacetylation is an epigenetic marker for gene repression and is crucial for transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression, and developmental processes. HDAC4 is particularly vital for the survival of retinal neurons, a process it manages through shuttling between the nucleus and cytoplasm. Mice lacking HDAC4 have been observed to exhibit chondrocyte hypertrophy and irregular bone growth, characterized by shortened growth plates and enlarged secondary ossification centers.
