Research has revealed that mice will actively consume high doses of corticosterone, a behavior linked to increased dopamine activity in the mesolimbic system. Additionally, corticosterone enhances spatial memory abilities by inducing neuroplastic changes in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, without impairing recognition memory. It plays a crucial role in regulating learning and memory processes, acting through high-affinity mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) and low-affinity glucocorticoid receptors (GR), primarily located in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Metabolically, corticosterone influences glycogen synthesis and fatty acid storage, impacting blood sugar levels and lipid metabolism. Moreover, corticosterone significantly affects cardiac function by maintaining cardiac performance and electrophysiological properties through GR and MR signaling pathways.
