Target Information
Progesterone is chiefly recognized as the pregnancy hormone in females, with its main functions focused on preserving pregnancy. It prepares the endometrium, reduces myometrial contractions for implantation, supports gestation, and inhibits lactation during pregnancy. The functions of progesterone in mice involve multiple aspects such as pregnancy maintenance, neuroprotection, and endocrine regulation. Research has shown that adult male mice may also respond to progesterone concerning cognitive performance, with effects potentially unrelated to PRs, but possibly involving BDNF levels' trophic actions in the hippocampus or increased GABAA activity in the hippocampus and cortex.
