Target Information
Dynamin-like GTPase OPA1, located in the mitochondria, is a dynamin-related GTPase crucial for maintaining normal mitochondrial morphology. It facilitates the fusion of the mitochondrial inner membranes, regulates cristae structure, and supports respiratory chain function. In mice, OPA1 is involved in several key processes, including mitochondrial fusion, morphology maintenance, and energy metabolism. Its absence or dysfunction can result in abnormal mitochondrial morphology, cell death, and the development of various diseases. Research indicates that stabilizing the long form of OPA1, through inhibitors or genetic manipulation, can protect mitochondrial function and decrease cell death. For instance, in a fatty liver model, stabilizing the long form of OPA1 has been shown to enhance mitochondrial respiration and gluconeogenesis.
