Target Information
S-methyl-5'-thioadenosine phosphorylase catalyzes the reversible phosphorylation of S-methyl-5'-thioadenosine (MTA) into adenine and 5-methylthioribose-1-phosphate. It plays a role in the degradation of MTA, a key by-product of polyamine biosynthesis, and is responsible for the initial step in the methionine salvage pathway following the generation of MTA from S-adenosylmethionine. The enzyme has broad substrate specificity, with a preference for 6-aminopurine nucleosides. In mice, MTAP functions predominantly as a tumor suppressor gene, inhibiting tumor initiation and progression by regulating methionine metabolism and maintaining polyamine balance.
