Target Information
Apelin is a peptide hormone that serves as the endogenous ligand for the G-protein-coupled apelin receptor. It acts as a balanced agonist. By binding to its receptor APJ, apelin exerts various cardiovascular effects, such as enhancing cardiac contractility, countering vasoconstriction induced by angiotensin II (Ang II), and inhibiting atherosclerosis through increased nitric oxide (NO) production. In lactating mice, apelin helps regulate the balance of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) by inhibiting vasopressin (AVP) release.
