Myosin-Va is a processive actin-based motor capable of undertaking large steps that approximate the 36-nm pseudo-repeat of the actin filament. It plays a role in transporting melanosomes and mediates vesicle transport to the plasma membrane. Additionally, it might be necessary for polarization processes involved in dendrite formation. Myosin Va is abundantly expressed in the mouse brain, especially in the pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. It is crucial for postsynaptic trafficking and light membrane fractionation, both vital for neuronal signaling. In the dilute-lethal (d-n) mouse model, the absence of Myosin Va results in severe neurodevelopmental disorders, including ataxia, intellectual disability, and epileptic seizures.
