Target Information
Crystallins are the primary structural components of the vertebrate eye lens. In mice, γ-crystallin F is essential for normal lens development and function, primarily through its role in the expression regulation during lens cell differentiation and maturation, as well as serving as a structural component of the lens. The expression of the mouse γ-F gene is controlled by multiple transcription factors, including SOX1 and PAX6. SOX1 directly binds to conserved elements in the γ-crystallin gene promoter, regulating its expression, which is crucial for the normal development of lens fiber cells. γ-F is a key structural component that, along with other γ-crystallin family members, maintains the lens's optical transparency and mechanical stability. The γ-F protein interacts with other lens proteins, such as MIP/Aquaporin-0, and this interaction likely plays a significant role in lens function.
