Target Information
Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreatic islets and is encoded by the insulin (INS) gene. It serves as the body's primary anabolic hormone, regulating carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism by facilitating the absorption of glucose from the blood into liver, fat, and skeletal muscle cells. Its function is highly conserved across mammals, including guinea pigs. While guinea pigs are not as commonly used as some other rodents for diabetes research, they can be used to study aspects of glucose metabolism and insulin resistance. Among mammals, only guinea pig and coypu insulins are known to resist neutralization by antibodies to bovine insulin.
