Target Information

Interferon alpha-1, produced by macrophages, possesses antiviral properties. It stimulates the production of two enzymes: a protein kinase and an oligoadenylate synthetase. In mice, the primary functions of interferon alpha-1 (IFN-α1) are linked to antiviral and antitumor effects. The human interferon alpha-1 (IFN-α1) gene, when transfected into mice, can enhance resistance to genital herpes virus type 2 (HSV-2). The PKR pathway is the main antiviral mechanism activated following IFN-α1 transfection. Mice lacking a functional PKR pathway exhibit significantly reduced resistance to genital HSV-2 infection, showing weakened viral resistance compared to wild-type mice or those with a non-functional OAS pathway.
