Target Information
In mice, insulin primarily functions to regulate blood sugar levels, promote the absorption and utilization of glucose, and maintain metabolic balance. Pancreatic β cells are the main source of insulin secretion in mice. Normal metabolism heavily relies on insulin signaling. However, in certain disease states, such as insulin resistance or abnormalities in insulin receptor function, muscle tissue's sensitivity to insulin is reduced. Besides its effects on the metabolic system, insulin significantly impacts cardiac function. In mouse models of insulin resistance, such as ob/ob mice, impaired insulin signaling leads to reduced glucose utilization by the heart and increased fatty acid oxidation.
