Target Information

Cytosolic acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase (Acat2) is a key enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of cholesterol. ACAT2 is the sole acetyl-CoA cholesterol acylase expressed in the liver and small intestine, where it converts cholesterol into cholesterol esters, aiding in the formation of lipoproteins such as very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Mice deficient in ACAT2 exhibit a significant reduction in cholesterol absorption efficiency and cholesterol ester content. Additionally, ACAT2 influences diet-induced cholesterol-related fatty liver by regulating intrahepatic triglyceride metabolism. Under conditions of obesity and high-fat diet, overexpression of ACAT2 can improve the metabolic function of mice.
