Target Information
In mice, CYP11B1 is primarily involved in the synthesis of steroid hormones, particularly the production of cortisol and aldosterone. The enzyme encoded by CYP11B1, known as 11β-hydroxylase, is specifically expressed in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex. It converts 11-deoxycorticosterone into cortisol, which is subsequently converted into aldosterone by the action of CYP11B2. Loss of CYP11B1 function can cause various physiological and metabolic abnormalities. For instance, in CYP11B1 knockout mice, there is adrenal cortical hyperplasia, significantly reduced aldosterone and cortisol levels, and an increase in mineralocorticoids, such as deoxycorticosterone.
