Target Information
The polymeric immunoglobulin receptor facilitates the selective transcytosis of polymeric IgA and IgM across mucosal epithelial cells. It binds to these immunoglobulins at the basolateral surface of epithelial cells, and the resulting complex is transported across the cell to be secreted at the apical surface. During this process, a cleavage event occurs, separating the extracellular portion, known as the secretory component, from the transmembrane segment. In mice, pIgR is essential for the mucosal immune system, mediating the transmembrane transport of SIgA and SIgM to protect mucosa from pathogens and regulate the host immune response.
