Target Information
Glutamate receptor 4 is an ionotropic glutamate receptor that serves as a ligand-gated cation channel, activated by L-glutamate and glutamatergic agonists such as alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA), quisqualic acid, and kainic acid. Mutations or deletions in the Gria4 gene lead to spontaneous epileptiform discharges (SWD) in mice due to increased synaptic excitability. For instance, in C3H/HeJ mice, a natural insertion mutation in the Gria4 gene, known as IAP insertion, results in an 8-fold reduction in its expression, leading to SWD.
