Epidermal growth factor-like protein 7 (EGFL7) regulates vascular tubulogenesis in vivo by inhibiting platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB-induced smooth muscle cell migration and enhancing endothelial cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix, thereby promoting angiogenesis. This secreted protein is primarily expressed in endothelial cells and serves as a crucial signaling molecule for angiogenesis. EGFL7 facilitates endothelial cell migration, proliferation, and angiogenesis through interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM). During mouse embryonic development, EGFL7 is abundantly expressed in vascular progenitor cells and endothelial cells, contributing to embryonic angiogenesis and vascular remodeling. Knockout mouse models demonstrate that the absence of EGFL7 results in delayed vascular development, vascular abnormalities, and vascular lumen collapse, highlighting its critical role in maintaining vascular integrity.
