Troponin T is the subunit of the troponin complex that binds tropomyosin, granting calcium sensitivity to the actomyosin ATPase activity in striated muscle. The Tnnt1 gene encodes slow-twitch skeletal troponin T, a crucial component for muscle contraction. In mice, the absence or malfunction of Tnnt1 results in alterations to skeletal muscle fiber types, such as atrophy of slow-twitch fibers and a compensatory increase in fast-twitch fibers. This shift impacts muscle endurance and fatigue resistance, as slow-twitch fibers typically possess greater endurance but less explosive power.
