Target Information

Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-2 is part of the alpha subunit of the heteropentameric ligand-gated chloride channel, which is activated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Gabra2 serves several critical functions in mice, including regulating neurodevelopment, epilepsy susceptibility, alcohol dependence, stress response, and emotional behavior. It plays a vital role in mouse brain development. Research indicates that Gabra2 deficiency can lead to abnormal embryonic development, such as altered brain morphology and a widened ventricular septum, highlighting its key role in the normal development of brain structure and function. Additionally, in the olfactory bulb, Gabra2 deficiency significantly delays the maturation of adult neurons and reduces the frequency and amplitude of GABAergic postsynaptic currents, underscoring its importance in neuronal maturation and synaptic plasticity.
