Target Information
Galectin-1 is a lectin that binds to beta-galactoside and a broad spectrum of complex carbohydrates. It is involved in regulating apoptosis, cell proliferation, and cell differentiation. Galectin-1 inhibits the activity of CD45 protein phosphatase, thereby preventing the dephosphorylation of Lyn kinase. It is a potent inducer of T-cell apoptosis and plays a negative role in the differentiation of Th17 cells through the activation of the CD69 receptor. In mice, Galectin-1 has numerous biological functions, including immune regulation, inflammatory response, tumor progression, neurodevelopment, and defense against viral infections. Research indicates that Galectin-1-deficient mice experience more severe intestinal inflammation in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. This is linked to alterations in the Th17/Th1 balance and a reduction in the number of Foxp3+ regulatory T cells.
