Target Information

Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins, known as G proteins, play a crucial role as transducers in various signaling pathways, functioning downstream of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). The G protein α subunit (Gαo), encoded by the Gnao1 gene, is one of the primary G proteins in the mammalian brain and is vital for normal neuronal function. Gnao1 specifically regulates neurotransmitter release, with a particular focus on GABA, in the mouse brain. Research has shown that in Gnao1 mutant mice, the frequency of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) and miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) in the cortical cerebellar Purkinje cells is significantly reduced. This finding suggests that Gnao1 inhibits synaptic transmission by modulating presynaptic release.
