Target Information

Leptins in birds were discovered and characterized approximately twenty years after those in mammals. Unlike their mammalian counterparts, bird leptins are not expressed in adipose tissue. In ducks, leptin is encoded by the LEP gene. Previous studies suggest that bird leptin operates through an autocrine/paracrine mode of action, rather than functioning as a circulating hormone like in mammals.
