Protein delta homolog 1 is potentially involved in neuroendocrine differentiation and inhibits the differentiation of adipocytes. Dlk1 plays a crucial role in skeletal muscle development, particularly in regulating myogenic progenitor cells. A deficiency in Dlk1 results in reduced skeletal muscle mass, characterized by a decrease in muscle fiber count, lower muscle weight, and a transition in muscle fiber type from fast to slow-twitch fibers. Regarding skeletal muscle regeneration, Dlk1 contributes by regulating the proliferation and differentiation of myofibroblasts. Mice lacking Dlk1 exhibit impaired regeneration following muscle injury, with reduced myofiber generation and increased inflammatory responses, although the expression of myogenic genes does not significantly decrease.
