Target Information
Collagen type IV is a principal component of the basement membrane and plays a crucial role in mouse embryonic development. In mice, Collagen type IV is essential for the formation and stability of the basement membrane, regulation of embryonic development, and interaction with other molecules. Dysfunction in collagen type IV can lead to various diseases such as Alport syndrome, glomerulosclerosis, and tumor-related lesions. In mouse models of Alport syndrome, the absence of α3, α4, or α5 chains of collagen type IV results in structural defects in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM), causing proteinuria and renal failure. The expression and assembly of collagen type IV are tissue-specific. For instance, in the inner ear and lens of mice, the α1, α2, α3, and α5 chains are present; however, if the α3 chain is absent, only the α1, α2, and α5 chains can form a network.
