SCARD1, also known as SCARF1, is a gene involved in immune regulation, primarily influencing the regulation of immune cells and metabolic processes in mice. Studies indicate that SCARD1 expression is significantly elevated in mouse macrophages, particularly in Apoe-Card9-/- mice, which exhibit an enhanced ability to form foam cells upon exposure to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). This suggests that SCARD1 may play a role in regulating lipid metabolism and cholesterol transport, particularly in foam cell formation. SCARD1 expression is linked to the upregulation of CD36, a crucial factor in lipid metabolism that facilitates lipid absorption and transport. Additionally, SCARD1 expression is associated with an increased transfer of cholesterol from HDL to LDL and lipoprotein A, potentially impacting lipid metabolism and foam cell formation further.
