Type X collagen is primarily secreted by hypertrophic chondrocytes and plays a crucial role in forming a multi-component network structure with type II collagen, contributing to the formation and mineralization of the cartilage matrix. By aggregating cartilage matrix components, type X collagen facilitates the calcification of hypertrophic cartilage and regulates the differentiation and mineralization of chondrocytes. In mice, it is essential for endochondral ossification and chondrocyte differentiation and mineralization. A deficiency or abnormal function of type X collagen can lead to skeletal development defects, irregular cartilage structure, and mineralization disorders. In mice, the absence of type X collagen results in abnormal endochondral ossification, characterized by reduced height of the growth plate chondrocyte proliferation zone, inadequate cartilage matrix mineralization, and delayed skeletal development.
