Target Information
Osterix (Osx) is a crucial transcription factor in mouse skeletal development, primarily influencing osteoblast differentiation and the maintenance of bone formation and homeostasis. During embryonic development, Osx is a vital regulator of osteoblast differentiation. Deleting the Osx gene prevents the embryo from forming bone tissue, resulting in a complete absence of osteocyte and bone matrix formation, underscoring its essential role in osteoblast differentiation. Postnatally, Osx functions extend beyond osteoblast differentiation to include the regulation of bone mineralization and homeostasis. Loss of Osx leads to impaired bone mineralization, characterized by the loss of trabecular structure and a marked decrease in bone density. Moreover, Osx plays a role in regulating the maturation and function of osteocytes, helping maintain bone integrity by influencing their mineralization capacity and morphological characteristics.
