Target Information

Type II collagen is specific to cartilaginous tissues and is crucial for normal skeletal development during embryogenesis, promoting linear growth and enabling cartilage to withstand compressive forces. The Col2a1 gene, responsible for encoding type II collagen, is expressed early in embryonic development in mice, particularly in cartilage tissue. For instance, Col2a1 transcription is detectable in the perichondrium and craniofacial cartilage as early as day 9.5 of embryonic development and remains active throughout later stages. Although the Col2a1 gene is also expressed in the spinal cord, nervous tissue, and other areas, its primary function is centered on the formation and maintenance of cartilage.
