Target Information

Alpha-defensin 6/12 possesses broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, exhibiting antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive bacterium L. monocytogenes EGD and the Gram-negative bacteria E. coli ML-35p and avirulent S. typhimurium 7953, though not against the mouse-virulent S. typhimurium 14028S. It likely contributes to the antimicrobial barrier function of the small bowel mucosa. In mice, DEFA6 primarily functions in protecting the intestinal microbial barrier and regulating the immune system. Specifically, DEFA6 is expressed in Paneth cells within the mouse intestine, forming a nano-mesh structure to capture pathogens, thereby preventing bacterial invasion of the intestinal epithelial tissue.
