Target Information

Caspase-9 is a key component in the cascade of caspases responsible for executing apoptosis. When caspase-9 binds to Apaf-1, it becomes activated and subsequently cleaves and activates the effector caspases, caspase-3 (CASP3) and caspase-7 (CASP7). It facilitates apoptosis induced by DNA damage in a manner dependent on ABL1/c-Abl. Caspase-9 also cleaves poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and cleaves BIRC6 after DIABLO/SMAC inhibits BIRC6-caspase binding. In mice, caspase-9 primarily regulates apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway and plays crucial roles in neuronal development, disease models, and tumor suppression. In mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), the activation of caspase-9 is essential for apoptosis triggered by viral infections.
