Target Information
ATPase, Ca++ Transporting, Plasma Membrane 2, also known as Plasma Membrane Calcium-Transporting ATPase 2 (PMCA2), is an ATP-driven Ca2+ ion pump essential for maintaining basal intracellular Ca2+ levels in specialized cells of the cerebellar circuit as well as the vestibular and cochlear systems. It utilizes ATP as an energy source to transport cytosolic Ca2+ ions across the plasma membrane into the extracellular space. PMCA2 is characterized by its rapid activation and Ca2+ clearance rate, adept at managing fast neuronal Ca2+ dynamics. In mice, the Atp2b2 gene primarily facilitates calcium ion transport. The protein encoded by this gene, PMCA2, is expressed in cochlear hair cells and is pivotal for pumping calcium ions out of the endolymph, maintaining calcium ion balance in the inner ear. This function is crucial for hearing and balance, as mutations or deletions in PMCA2 can result in hearing loss, vestibular dysfunction, and ataxia.
