Target Information
Cartilage-associated protein is essential for the efficient 3-hydroxylation of prolyl residues in fibrillar collagen. In mice, the functions of cartilage-associated proteins include roles in bone development, cartilage formation, cell attachment, and are linked to various conditions such as osteoarthritis, bone dysplasia, and heart valve calcification. CRTAP is a component of the collagen proline 3-hydroxylation complex, which is crucial for the proper folding and assembly of collagen. A deficiency in CRTAP leads to excessive collagen modification, resulting in abnormal bone matrix mineralization, manifesting as a recessive form of Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Research shows that mice lacking CRTAP suffer from severe osteoporosis and skeletal dysplasia due to the impaired function of collagen 3-hydroxylation.
