Interleukin 12A is encoded by the IL12A gene in chicken. IL12A is a subunit of the cytokine Interleukin-12 (IL-12). IL-12 has diverse functions, including activation of immune responses. IL-12, also known as NK cell stimulatory factor or cytotoxic lymphocyte maturation factor, is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells that has been shown to mediate multiple effects on T cells and NK cells.
