Target Information
Nephrin appears to be crucial in developing or functioning the kidney glomerular filtration barrier, regulating glomerular vascular permeability. It may connect the podocyte slit diaphragm to the actin cytoskeleton. Nephrin also contributes to skeletal muscle formation by regulating myoblast fusion. In diabetic nephropathy, the reduction in nephrin expression is a significant factor leading to proteinuria. Although nephrin is mainly expressed in glomerular podocytes, its expression in other tissues has also been reported. For example, nephrin is also expressed in pancreatic β cells and may be involved in the regulation of insulin secretion. In addition, nephrin is also expressed in the testis, brain, and lymphoid tissues, although its specific functions in these tissues have not yet been fully clarified.
