Target Information

Calbindin plays a crucial role in buffering cytosolic calcium and may enhance the activity of a membrane Ca2+-ATPase and a 3',5'-cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase. In mice, Calbindin's primary functions include maintaining neuronal calcium homeostasis, providing neuroprotection, and regulating behavioral and cognitive functions. As a high-affinity calcium ion-binding protein, Calbindin is extensively found in various neuronal regions of the mouse brain, including the hippocampus, thalamus, and cerebellum. By binding to calcium ions, it helps stabilize intracellular calcium levels, thereby protecting neurons from calcium toxicity. Research indicates that Calbindin acts as a calcium ion buffer in the mouse brain, modulating calcium signals in postsynaptic neurons, which is vital for normal neuronal function.
