Target Information
Lactoperoxidase is a heme-containing oxidoreductase enzyme that catalyzes the transformation of thiocyanate (SCN-) into the antimicrobial agent hypothiocyanous acid (OSCN-) when hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is present. It also facilitates the conversion of iodide (I-) into hypoiodite (IO-) in the presence of H2O2. Administration of lactoperoxidase orally has shown a significant protective effect against influenza virus (H1N1/PR/8/34) infection in mice. The experiment revealed that, compared to the control group, mice treated with lactoperoxidase exhibited a substantial reduction in inflammatory cell infiltration in the lung tissue by the sixth day post-infection, along with a lower coagulation score in the lung tissue. Additionally, the lactoperoxidase-treated group had significantly decreased levels of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 in serum, suggesting that lactoperoxidase may help reduce lung inflammation caused by influenza virus infection by inhibiting the infiltration of inflammatory cells.
