Target Information
4-Trimethylaminobutyraldehyde dehydrogenase efficiently converts gamma-trimethylaminobutyraldehyde into gamma-butyrobetaine (in vitro). While it can catalyze the irreversible oxidation of a wide range of aldehydes to their corresponding acids through an NAD-dependent reaction, this process occurs with low efficiency. The enzyme also oxidizes aldehydes derived from biogenic amines and polyamines. In mice, ALDH9A1 plays several critical roles, including the regulation of lipid metabolism, tumor suppression, and DNA damage repair associated with Fanconi anemia. The expression level of ALDH9A1 can be influenced by dietary components, and under high-fat diet conditions, its expression in the mouse liver decreases.
